One Year In: The Story That Started It All—and What Comes Next
Before there was an organization, there was a moment.
A young mother in Asheville, doing her best to navigate systems that didn’t always make sense—figuring out healthcare, responsibilities, and her future all at once. Like many, Kelly White was determined. But what she needed most in that moment wasn’t just determination.
She needed guidance.
Someone to explain things clearly. Someone to advocate. Someone to make the path feel possible.
That experience stayed with her—and quietly became the foundation for everything that would come next.
The Past: Turning Experience into Purpose
Kelly’s journey didn’t follow a straight line—it evolved.
After graduating from Asheville High School, she stepped into the healthcare field, working as a phlebotomist, Certified Nursing Assistant, and Certified Medical Assistant. Each role gave her a deeper understanding of how people experience care—and where gaps exist.
She went on to earn advanced degrees in health science, public health, and health education, expanding both her knowledge and her impact. But even with credentials and experience, one thing remained clear:
Too many people were still navigating their health without clear, accessible information—especially in communities that have historically been underserved.
“Honestly, I had already been doing the work,” she shared. “I just didn’t have a title for it.”
The Present: One Year of Community Health & Wellness Collective Services
In May 2025, that work finally had a name.
Community Health & Wellness Collective Services (CHWCS) became a 501 (c) (3) organization founded to make health education more accessible, more relatable, and more rooted in real life. What started as a vision has, in just one year, grown into a community-centered effort focused on:
Health education that people can actually understand
Wellness initiatives that meet people where they are
Advocacy for more equitable, culturally responsive care
Building partnerships that make support easier to navigate
Today, CHWCS is more than a nonprofit—it’s a reflection of lived experience turned into action.
In just one year, Kelly has shown up—in classrooms, community spaces, and events—connecting with hundreds of community members across Western North Carolina.
From leading wellness classes to having one-on-one conversations, she continues to show up in the same way she once needed someone to show up for her.
And people are responding.
They’re asking questions. Making changes. Showing up for their health in new ways.
When you step back and look at it, that’s real impact.
That’s what one year has made possible.
The Future: Building Something That Actually Works—for Everyone
This next year isn’t about doing more for the sake of it.
It’s about doing it better—and reaching further.
Because right now, Kelly stands in two very real places at once.
In one space, she’s in conversations with partners, funders, and organizations—talking about systems, outcomes, and what it takes to build something sustainable.
In another, she’s face-to-face with community members—answering questions, breaking things down, and helping someone figure out what their next step even is.
Most people only live in one of those worlds.
Kelly moves between both.
She knows how to sit at the table and talk about long-term impact—and then turn around and lead a class, have a one-on-one conversation, or help someone understand something that finally clicks.
That’s the work.
And that’s what makes CHWCS, or The Collective as we like to call it, different.
Because this isn’t built from theory. It’s built from lived experience—and it’s being shaped in real time by the people it’s meant to serve.
The future of this work looks like: More programs—but only the ones people actually need Stronger partnerships—but the kind that make things easier, not more complicated More access—but in ways that feel real, not overwhelming
And at the center of it all is the same goal:
No one should have to figure this out alone.
This Month Matters
May marks one year of CHWCS.
One year of showing up. One year of building trust. One year of turning something personal into something that belongs to the community.
Now comes the part where that work grows.
And that only happens with support.
If you believe in building stronger systems, closing gaps in care, and investing in real, community-led solutions—this is a moment to step in.
If you’ve ever needed clearer information, more support, or someone to walk alongside you—this work is for you, too.
That’s the line Kelly has always walked.
And that’s the invitation.
This month, your support helps:
Keep programs accessible and consistent
Expand reach across Western North Carolina
Create more spaces where people feel seen, heard, and supported
As part of our birthday month, we’re also putting together a small gift basket as a way to say thank you—anyone who gives during May will be included in the raffle we’ll announce online and by email at the beginning of June!
If you’d like to be part of what the next year looks like, you can make a gift here: https://www.chwcs.org/donate
Another powerful way to support this work is by partnering with or hiring CHWCS.
Our partnerships are at the heart of everything we do—they’re how we reach more people, build trust, and make sure support actually shows up where it’s needed most. Over the past year, we’ve had the opportunity to work alongside organizations like YMCA, Burton Street Community Association, AmeriHealth Caritas, and partners like HERS, LLC—each one helping extend the reach of this work in meaningful ways.
If you’re an organization looking to bring health education, wellness programming, or community-centered support into your space, we’d love to connect.
Because this work didn’t start as an idea on paper.
It started with someone trying to navigate something complicated without enough support.
Now, it’s something bigger.
And the next year is something we build—together.
Thank you for being a part of it.
With gratitude, The Collective
